African American beachfront businesses once clustered along this section of the island. Segregation extended even to the Seawall and beaches. Most African American activity was confined to this one-block area that included Gus Allen’s Villa, the Jambalaya Restaurant and the Manhattan Club. Gus Allen, an astute businessman, owned the Jambalaya and Villa locations. (Mapped to the site of the original Gus Allen's Cafe.)
